Those among us who have ever lamented a missed opportunity to grab a McDonald’s toy before its Happy Meal run has ended are in for a reprieve.
The fast food company constantly maintains its edge in the munchies market with Happy Meals, toys, games and cups that have worked their way into the collectibles realm.
Some of these characters are about to be recreated in 2D and appear on six cups that will accompany the Collector’s meal for a limited time, starting Tuesday.
Cups will be adorned with a mashup of beloved Happy Meal characters from over the years, including Barbie and Hot Wheels (she has drive), Beanie Babies (a hot item in the 1990s), Hello Kitty and Peanuts (who said dogs and cats can’t get along?), and Coca-Cola, as the two brands have been linked for decades.
Of course, the lineup wouldn’t be complete without McDonald’s original characters The Grimace, Boo Buckets, Cowpoke McNugget Buddy and Funny Fry Friends, who will be sharing another cup.
But wait, there’s more: Shrek, Jurassic Park and the Minions will also be popping up and sharing a cup of their own.
“There is an undeniable thrill when you capture that elusive McDonald’s collectible or the final piece to complete your collection,” McDonald’s global marketing director and head of new business ventures Morgan Flatley said in a statement. “We’re bringing back some of our most beloved memorabilia with a twist, giving fans a memory they can hold in their hands.”
Unlike previous meal incarnations, a Collector’s Meal is available all day. The specialty mugs will be distributed with a Sausage McMuffin and Egg meal during breakfast hours, or with either a 10-piece Chicken McNugget or Big Mac meal the rest of the day, McDonald’s said.
Events are also running starting August 17, the last day of the meal promotion, including at Coney Island, where cups will unlock free roller coasters.
