A newlywed Oregon nurse missing for three days was found dead Saturday, and her neighbor, also a nurse, was arrested and charged with her murder.
Melissa Jubane, 32, a cardiac nurse, didn’t show up for the morning shift at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland on Wednesday, “raising concerns among her co-workers, friends and family,” the Beaverton Police Department said in a statement. “Her absence without communication was considered unusual and alarming.”
Police found her apartment empty, without her wallet, keys or phone, and her car still in the parking garage. A three-day search began and on Saturday the police announced that they had found her remains and charged her neighbor27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert, with second-degree murder.
In a statement, police said they had withheld further details “to preserve the integrity of the investigation,” but noted they still welcomed tips from the public.
Jubane worked at St. Vincent for six years, the hospital told The Oregonian.
“Our hearts are broken by the news of the death of our Providence St. Vincent nurse and colleague, Melissa Jubane,” the hospital told the news agency. “This comes as a shock to us alland she is cared for by her co-workers. Melissa was an exceptional nurse.”
Schubert is also a nurse the two did not work at the same hospital. He worked at Portland Providence Medical Center from September 2022 to October 2023, KATU-TV reported.
Two weeks before her disappearance, Jubane had married Bryan Llantero in Hawaii on August 24, KHON-TV reported, and the next day they celebrated with friends and family. She was from Washington state and Llantero was from Kalihi, Hawaii. The couple had met in Hawaii and would fly back and forth to see each other during their 10 years together, relatives told KHON.
After the wedding, Jubane and Llantero returned to the Pacific Northwest and spent Labor Day together. Jubane then drove back to her apartment in Beaverton, Ore., which was close to her work, while Llantero stayed in Bremerton, Wash., with Melissa’s family, KHON reported. Her plan was to find a job closer to Bremerton.
