WAUKESHA, Wisconsin — More than 20 people were injured when an SUV crashed into a Christmas parade in suburban Milwaukee, police say.

A live video of the parade from the city of Waukesha showed a red SUV breaking through the barriers and speeding onto the highway where the parade was taking place.

Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said the suspect’s vehicle was recovered and the investigation is ongoing.

West Allis city councilor Angelito Tenorio, who is running for Wisconsin state treasurer, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he was watching the parade with his family when they saw the SUV speeding through the area.

“Then we heard a loud explosion and deafening screams and cries from the people the vehicle crashed into,” Tenorio said. “And then we saw people running or stopped crying, and there were people on the ground who looked like they had been hit by a vehicle.”

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Governor Tony Evers said on Twitter that he was praying for the families and all community members involved.

Thompson says there are no other threats to the community and the scene is now safe.

Police say they’re looking at an interested person.
