One person was found dead at Ōmāpere.
Police launched a murder investigation after a body was found at an address in the Northland settlement of Ōmāpere.
Police said authorities were investigating the circumstances of an incident on Akiha Street and one person was detained.
Detective Inspector Rhys Johnston said officers were summoned to a property in Ōmāpere before lunch on Friday.
One person was found dead, while another person was taken into custody at the scene.
Police said no charges have yet been brought, but they have not called anyone else in connection with the incident.
A crime scene investigation was underway.
Police said they would not release any further details about the deceased until his family is notified.
A resident on the street said he saw three police cars near the end of the dead-end street between 11:00 and 14:00 and found this to be a “very unusual” sight in the area.
He said an ambulance arrived on the street at lunch time.
A local who lives near Kokokuia Rd, one of the main roads in town, said he saw a helicopter take off at around 1:40 p.m.
Another resident, who was taking a walk in the woods, said he heard a helicopter at noon.
A local shopkeeper said he did not know what had happened, but that 20 police officers had visited his shop during the day to buy groceries, which was very unusual due to the ongoing lockdown.
Ōmāpere is a small settlement at the mouth of Hokianga Harbor on the west coast of Northland.
It is about two hours’ drive from Whangārei.
