Some lanes of I-57 were closed and traffic backed up during the Monday morning commute after a fatal hit-and-run crash, Illinois State Police said.
About 3:48 a.m., troopers responded to a crash involving a pedestrian in the northbound lanes of I-57 and 111th Street in Chicago, ISP said. According to authorities, a preliminary investigation has shown that a vehicle was stopped on the right shoulder with a passenger outside. The passenger was struck by an unknown vehicle, which did not stop and continued north, ISP said.
The passenger was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead, ISP said.
As of 6:20 a.m., all northbound lanes were closed, ISP said, with traffic diverted to 119th. NBC 5 Traffic Reporter Kye Martin advised drivers to consider alternate options including Halsted, Vincennes or Bishop Ford.
