A New Jersey man died in the hospital after an encounter with law enforcement seeing him restrained by officers, prompting an investigation.
New Jersey Attorney General Office of Public Integrity and Accountability on Tuesday confirmed it would investigate the incident, which began in a Bayonne apartment.
Officers responded to the home on Broadway, near Linnet Street, early Monday after receiving a 911 call about a lot of screaming coming from inside the building, according to a statement from the attorney general’s office.
When they arrived at the scene around 12:20 p.m., the fight was still going onsaid the police. Officers eventually found “the man who had been screaming and requesting medical assistance,” according to prosecutors.
The police chose to restrain the man before being transported to Bayonne Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 8:45 a.m. His name has not been released and it is unclear what medical problem he may have been facing shortly before his death.
No further details were provided.
The cause of death and the manner of death is currently under investigationaccording to the prosecutor’s office, which is required to investigate all deaths that occur during police encounters under a 2019 law.
Its findings will then be presented to a grand jury to determine whether criminal charges are necessary.
