Police arrested an upstate man Thursday for shooting death of the famous “Extra Crack” sneaker retailer in Soho this spring.
Jayquan Straker, 35, was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Javier Osario-Mejia. The police then suspected that it was a robbery gone wrong. The Poughkeepsie resident also faces charges of robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
Osario-Mejia was punched in the right thigh outside a luxury clothing store in June Green St. near Grand St.. At the time, police sources said the wound had been so severe they were convinced he had been shot multiple times.
The well-known sneaker aficionado had been set to open a new store on Houston St. according to a friend who spoke to the Daily News shortly after the shooting.
The friend, who gave his name as Andre, said Osario-Meija had a daughter he was raising alongside his business, describing him as a “very active father”.
“This doesn’t feel random. It feels purposeful. Everyone loved him,” Andre said at the time.
Information about what led to Straker’s arrest nearly two months after his victim died was unclear Saturday night.
