Two NYPD officers fatally shot a 62-year-old gunman during a confrontation at a residential area in East Harlem early Sunday. said the police.
Officers responded to 911 calls for a man with a gun on the grounds of the Washington Houses near Third Ave. and 103rd St. about 12:30
The NYPD’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system had also been activated in the area, NYPD Housing Director Martine Materasso told reporters
Officers from the NYPD’s 5th Precinct, which covers the apartment complex, gave “numerous commands verbally to drop the gun” but the gunman did not comply and two officers opened fire, striking him, Materasso said.
Officers performed CPR on the man before medics took him to Harlem Hospital but he could not be saved.
The NYPD found his firearm and released a photo of it.
Materasso said police are still investigating whether the gunman fired any shots at officers. Police have not yet released his name.
