OAKLAND — Authorities have released the name of the suspect arrested in a shooting earlier this month in Oakland that left a father of two injured as he slept in his home.
The suspect — identified as 20-year-old Oakland resident Damon Roberts — was arrested Monday in Richmond, the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department said in a news release.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Roberts with several felonies, including unlawful firearms activity and possession of a machine gun. He is being held without bail at the Santa Rita Jail.
The shooting happened Aug. 1 in a housing project in the 1900 block of East 19th Street in East Oakland, not far from San Antonio Park, according to police.
The victim, identified by family and authorities as 33-year-old Run Hua Kuang, survived but remains hospitalized. He is on life support in the intensive care unit and fighting for his life, according to sister Jasmine Kuang.
He had just returned home from work as a truck driver and was taking a nap when a bullet penetrated the wall of his apartment, tore through the headboard and hit him in the head, sister Jasmine said.
Kuang was taken to a hospital where he underwent a seven-hour operation,
Jasmine said her brother immigrated to the United States from Taishan, China in 2005 “to look for the American dream for his family.” He is the sole breadwinner for his wife, baby and three-year-old daughter. Being the only member of the family who can speak English, he alone took care of the responsibility and communication of the household.
Hua is the sole breadwinner for his wife of 7 years and their 7-month-old and 3-year-old daughters along with his parents. They live in a housing project in East Oakland. His life was built on being disciplined and dedicated as a husband, father and son.
