An off-duty detective allegedly shot a teenager who took his cell phone during a traffic stop in Brooklyn on Sunday, officers and sources said.
Ryan Straker, 19, punched the off-duty officer, a 54-year-old man, and ripped off his cellphone during the lunchtime break on Snediker Avenue near Linden Boulevard in Brownsville, according to authorities and police sources.
The police were armed with a gun, which apparently went off during a struggle between the men, authorities and sources said.
The teenager was taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.
He was charged with second-degree attempted robbery, third-degree assault and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, authorities said.
The on-duty officer, who did not need to be hospitalized after the encounter, had not been charged in connection with Tuesday’s shooting.
The City Department of Correction referred all questions to the NYPD.
