ONE of the UK’s smallest detached homes – measuring 13 feet square above ground – is on the market for £ 235,000.
The ground floor houses the bedroom and a spiral staircase leads down to the living room, kitchen, bathroom and a courtyard.
The remodeled gatehouse is located on the site of historic Grimston Park, North Yorks.
Owners Debra, 60, and Dave Bowman, 61, who are now separated, are selling after living there since February 2000.
Debra said: “We used to have a large semi-detached house in York and we were wondering if we could handle downsizing quite drastically.
“The atmosphere made it easy because it was so beautiful and all our fears were resolved very quickly.
It’s a mansion that makes you feel like you’re in the middle of nature, but you’re only 20 minutes either way to York or Leeds and only five minutes from really good motorway links plus only 40 minutes to Leeds Bradford Airport.
“It only takes 30 minutes to clean – and who would complain about that?”
There were some areas that took some time to get used to in the transition to a smaller home for the couple.
Dave explained: “The bedroom is on the ground floor and has a small spiral staircase that takes you up to the sleeping area.
“The mattress is placed on a platform as opposed to a bed frame and if you are a tall person like myself you can hit your head on the ceiling a couple of times like I did.”
