Former Pakistani tempo bowler Shoaib Akhtar has sparked controversy by stepping down from a live show on PTV following a disagreement with host Nauman Niaz. He later posted a video on social media saying he is a “national star” he deserves respect.
Akhtar, nickname Rawalpindi Express, was featured on the show discussing the performance of the Babar Azam-led team in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup along with cricketing greats such as West Indies’ Vivian Richards and England’s David Gower.
While the panel was discussing the performance of tempo bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, Akhtar was interrupted by Niaz. A visibly upset Akhtar expressed his displeasure and the host offered to leave the show in the middle if he wanted to.
“You’re a little rude and I do not want to say that, but if you’re over smart, you can go. I say that on the air.” Niaz said Akhtar.
Here is the video of the whole incident:
Later, given his side of the story, Akhtar tweeted and posted a video, saying that Niaz was “obnoxious” and that he was stopping the show.
“Multiple clips are circulating on social media, so I thought I should clarify. Dr Noman was horrible and rude when he asked me to leave the show, it was embarrassing especially when you see legends like Sir Vivian Richards and David Gower sitting on the set with some of my contemporaries (sic), “tweeted Akhtar.

In a two-minute video posted on social media, Akhtar said: “It was an unsympathetic incident on PTV where Nauman Niaz was horrible and he asked me to leave without rhyme or reason … I do not know why he said that he insulted a national star on national television and put me aside.I noticed that all the superstars (former cricketers) were on the show, what image would they form?
“I asked Nauman to resolve the issue somehow … because the conversation would go viral. So, to make sure that a negative portrayal does not go out to the foreigners, I tried to publish it as a joke that he pulls my leg.I asked him on TV to say sorry but he did not.If he did not apologize, I thought I had enough and it was time for me to leave (sic).
“I tried my best to repair the damage in the program, but he did not tell me sorry. He insulted me on national television. Being a national star, I felt very bad … so many foreigners (sitting) “in the program; what will they think … what impression will they have … how national stars are offended here. I thought I should resign and leave. I just got up and left. A very sad incident,” he said. completed Akhtar.
