SUNNYVALE — A man died Monday night after crashing his car on the 101 Freeway and driving across multiple lanes before being struck by two oncoming vehicles, the California Highway Patrol said.
The male pedestrian died at the scene, CHP Officer Alicia Moreno said.
The incident happened around 10:24 p.m. on Highway 101 just south of Highway 237 in Sunnyvale, Moreno said.
The man had been driving his vehicle in a northbound direction on national highway 101 when he had a single traffic accident on the right shoulder of the highway. He exited his vehicle and ran across all northbound lanes before jumping the concrete freeway divider on the southbound side, according to the CHP.
The man continued to run across the lanes and was hit by a southbound vehicle in the other lane, Moreno said. He was struck in the first lane, where he was struck by a second vehicle.
The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office did not release the person’s name pending confirmation of their identity and notification of next of kin.
The drivers of both vehicles involved in the crash remained at the scene and were cooperating with the investigation, Moreno said. Authorities said they did not believe alcohol was a factor in either the initial crash or the subsequent collisions.
