Suffolk County homicide detectives are investigating the deaths of two toddlers who were pulled from a pond behind a Holtsville apartment complex Saturday afternoon.
The sisters, ages 2 and 4, were initially reported missing in a 911 call from a family member, the Suffolk Police Department said in a news release.
Police who responded to the Fairfield Townhouses at 2 Victorian Court joined Good Samaritans as they searched the complex. The girls were found behind the complex in a pond by good Samaritans and pulled from the water at about 3:20 p.m., police said.
They were taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
The police did not give an initial explanation as to why the incident is being investigated as a possible murder. Still, detectives are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the homicide squad at 631-852-6392.
