Barrington School District 220 has gone into lockdown following reports of Lake County sheriffs chasing a gunman, according to information from district officials and the county sheriff’s social media page.
“The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for a possible armed subject in connection with a homicide in Chicago,” a post on the sheriff’s Facebook page said. The man “fled on foot from Chicago Police from a business near Route 14 and Pepper Road.”
The social media post, which was added around 2 p.m. Tuesday, called the man “armed and dangerous.”
People are advised to avoid the area at this time.
The Pioneer Press could not immediately reach state or local law enforcement officials for more information. An official with the Barrington Police Department would only confirm that there was a “law enforcement situation” in the area.
District 220 officials informed families that “out of an abundance of caution” all of its schools are on “Secure Building and Teach,” where students remain in the building and classes but no one is allowed in or out, according to a message sent to families and submitted to Pioneer Press.
“All students and staff are safe and class is continuing as normal,” the statement said.
School officials anticipate that dismissal may be affected due to police activity and possible road closures in the Barrington area.
