Say goodbye to PWHL Boston, and say hello to the Boston Fleet.
After an inaugural season with its six teams known only by the cities they represented, the PWHL finally announced nicknames and brand identities for its franchises on Monday morning.
Along with the fleet, the other team names are:
Boston captain Hilary Knight appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Monday to announce the team names along with PWHL VP of Business Operations Amy Scheer.
“The fans from day one told us they wanted conventional team names,” Scheer said. “They told us a few things. The names have to be bold, the names have to be confident, have to be strong, and you better make sure they connect to the city and the state.
“We hope we did that through these names, and we can’t wait to see our fans bring these names to life.”
It was a fairly successful first season for the PWHL despite the lack of unique brand identities, with each team wearing nearly identical jerseys that were largely differentiated by color.
“From my perspective, it’s less,” Danielle Marmer, GM of Boston’s PWHL team, said before last season. “We’re seeing on social media that there’s rumblings about the names and I think that happens in every market but we’re not too worried about it. Whatever we end up with a name, I think our fans will get behind it.”
