A Republican congressional candidate seeking Illinois’s 16th District seat instead will retain the now two-term Democrat-held 14th District mandate. Lauren Underwood from Naperville.
Oswego Republican James Marter He submitted a new application on Wednesday. candidacy statement The Federal Election Commission has announced its intention to run for the 14th District. Marter was among the Republicans who challenged the 16th District Representative Adam Kinzinger of Channahon.
In an email Thursday, Marter said he’s switching races as he hopes his home will be within the new borders for the 14th District when Illinois’ legislative map is completed before the 2022 primary election.
“The reality is that the old 16th will crumble and any new 16th will likely have little overlap with the old one,” said Marter, who failed for Congress in the 14th District in 2020.
Previously, Marter tried to oust Kinzinger from his seat in 2018 and ran for the U.S. Senate in 2016.
Marter is the first GOP candidate to prepare paperwork for the 14th District.
Marter’s departure from the 16th Regional leaves six GOP candidates there: Kinzinger; Catalina Lauf of Woodstock; Michael Rebresh of Minooka; Jack Lombardi from Manhattan; Teresa Pfaff of Machesney Park; and Geno Young of Chicago. Democrat Marsha Williams of Wilmington is also competing in 16th place.

Marter said new leadership is needed in Congress to help Illinois.
“Bad federal policies make bad state government worse, and Congressman Underwood and his party have failed our communities, our state, and our nation,” he said in a news release.
Congressional county boundaries are redrawn based on population changes between the 2010 and 2020 censuses. Illinois’ population declined at the time, and the state would lose a congressional district as a result.
District 14 now includes portions of Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane, Will, DeKalb, and Kendall counties.
District 16 now includes some or all of 14 Illinois counties. It stretches from the Far Northwest suburbs and the Rockford area down to Ford County.
