Is Rory McIlroy auditioning for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’?
The Northern Irishman, upset by his tee shot on the 17th hole at Colorado’s Castle Pines Golf Club in the second round of the BMW Championship, threw his driver into the water.
“Obviously not happy with that one,” said one Golf Channel analyst.
“You don’t see him lose his balance too often,” replied another.
McIlroy recovered from a bogey on the 15th hole, which took his score to -1 on the day, and followed it up with a poor drive to start the par-5 No. 17, well…
“Those two things combined, yes, he was upset,” the play-by-play team said. “The club didn’t go all the way in, so it’s not a problem.”
The scene was reminiscent of Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore character — which gets a sequel — and his putter-throwing antics.
McIlory was able to retrieve the club easily and finished the hole with a par.
He added a final par on the 18th hole to finish at 1-under 71 on the day, following his 2-under opening round on Thursday.
Mcilory was tied for 14th at the end of his round at -1, with several players remaining on the course.
He’ll have his work cut out for him to climb the leaderboard, Adam Scott posting an otherworldly -9 on the day to lead the pack at -13, with Alex Noren right behind him at -8.
One player they don’t have to worry about for the rest of the weekend is Hideki Matsuyama, as an Olympic bronze medalist withdrew after posting a five-under 57 on Thursday, citing a lower back injury.
