“From wildfires to waste, clean water is essential to sustaining in Los Angeles, protecting the places and people we love, and fighting the increasingly severe effects of climate change,” said a statement from Heal the Bay.

Coastal Cleanup Day is the flagship event of Heal the Bay’s worldwide Coastal Cleanup Month. Coastal Cleanup Month is an effort to mobilize residents to collect harmful and unpleasant garbage and debris while enjoying the outdoors.

In 2020, Heal the Bay volunteers collected more than 40,000 litter from neighborhoods, parks, trails and beaches. Personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves, which became indispensable during the COVID-19 pandemic, were among the top 10 types of recycled garbage.

All participants are asked to wear masks, use gloves and stay away if their health is not good. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, spots in sanitary areas will be limited.

Los Angeles County officials also reminded residents that thanks to an online campaign, children can learn to keep beaches clean every day.

District Trash! The campaign teaches children how litter from all over Los Angeles County circulates in the watershed and reaches the ocean and beaches like Dockweiler, Venice and Zuma.

Third- to fifth-year students also have the chance to participate in a poster contest and share their own environmental message about keeping beaches clean. Five winners from each class wrap their artworks in beach trash barrels each year at some of Southern California’s most popular beaches.

Entries are accepted throughout the year, but the deadline to enter the contest for summer 2022 is January 9, 2022.

A “Clean and Blue” music video and “Ocean Heroes” activity guide for kids were developed in partnership with Heal the Bay and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.
