US Air Force security guards at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland exchanged gunfire Saturday morning with at least one suspect who twice opened fire on the entrance from a moving vehicle, a base spokesman said.
First shooting unfolded around 2:15 a.m. at the main gate of Lackland Air Force Base. No one was injured in the exchange of gunfire, which is currently being investigated by the San Antonio Police Department.
“The security personnel stated they heard multiple shots fired and the shots fired missed them,” said Sgt. Washington Moscoso said in a press release. “Following this incident, security staff added more armed guards as a precaution.”
Just hours later, around 4:30 a.m., a Sedan pulled up near the same entrance and someone again shots fired at Air Force personnel, who restored the gunfire. The car fled the scene and no one has yet been arrested.
It is not clear how many shots were fired or how many suspects were involved in the pair of drive-by shootingssaid the police. A motive was also unclear.
Base spokeswoman Stefanie Antosh said the gate was closed in the aftermath of the shooting, but was reopened around 9:30 a.m.
“There is no threat to the installation,” Antosh confirmed. – We had no injuries, no deaths.
In addition to Lackland, Joint Base San Antonio includes Randolph Air Force Base and the Army’s Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis training camps. More than 24,000 active duty members and 10,000 Department of Defense civilians live on site, according to the base’s website.
