All lanes of the Edens Expressway between Old Orchard Road and Dempster Street have reopened following an earlier multi-vehicle crash and fuel spill, according to Total Traffic.
The spill initially caused lane closures in both directions, although northbound lanes reopened shortly after 5 p.m. The southbound lane was later reopened shortly after 6:30 p.m.
Traffic was backed up heavily to the Tower Road exit, with delays of up to two hours reported as lanes are closed between Old Orchard Road and Dempster Street in both directions as a clean-up is underway.
According to Total Traffic Chicago, the crash involved a hazmat release and at least two other vehicles, with damage at the scene reported.
Illinois State Police later confirmed that a three-vehicle crash occurred in the inbound lanes of I-94 near Old Orchard Road, where a commercial vehicle caused a chain reaction crash with two other vehicles.
The commercial vehicle suffered a diesel fuel spill due to the crash, which led to lane closures in both directions for cleanup work.
The drivers of the other two vehicles involved were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.
