Los Angeles (AP) – Edmundo Sosa hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning, Tyler O’Neill made a running catch for the final out, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Tuesday night.
O’Neill took the lead in ninth place with a single off Blake Trainan (1-2). O’Neill stole second base and scored again when Sousa hit a sharp grounder in left field. Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner was playing near the grass and was unable to put a glove on the ball.
The Dodgers had a chance in the ninth when pinch-hitter Yoshi Tsutsugo made a two-out walk and jumped to second on a single from Cody Bellinger. Mookie Bates then lined up a ball on the warning track on the left, but O’Neal leapt to Alex Reyes to save his 16th.
John Gantt bowled six shutout innings, but the right-hander did not factor in the decision when Matt Beatty’s two-run homer tied Giovanni Gallegos (3-1) in the seventh.
Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson each gave two hits and made great defensive plays in the sixth. Edman made a leaping catch at second base to interrupt Max Munsey’s line drive, which had a hit probability of 91% according to MLB Statcast.
With runners in second and third, Carlsen prevented Gavin Lux from tying the game when he made a sliding catch in the center to end the innings.
St. Louis started the game with three straight hits off starter David Price. Edman went ahead with a double, moved to third on a single by Carlsen and then scored when Paul Goldschmid bowled a ball into the corner in left field for a ground-rule double.
The Cardinals scored another in the second run when Carlsen ended Price’s night with a two-out single to drive in Jose Rondon.
The Dodgers eventually broke to tie it in seventh. Albert Pujols does a one-out walk before being picked up for a pinch-runner. Beatty swings Gallegos’s slider to the right on the wall for his second home run of Homestand.
Gantt allowed four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. It was only a second no-decision in the last nine starts for the right-handed batsman.
Price – who was used as an opener for the second time this season – allowed two runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings, which included walks and three strikes.
After Price was out, Joe Kelly, Phil Bickford, Nate Jones and Mitch White held the Cardinals for one hit in 5 1/3 innings before the Cardinals were able to reach Trennan in ninth.
Cardinals: OF Harrison Bader (right hairline rib fracture) has started some light throwing and swinging. He deserves a 10-day injury list exit on Friday, but manager Mike Schildt isn’t sure Bader will be ready.
Dodgers: OF AJ Pollock (left hamstring strain) was 1 for 3 with a home run and played six innings for Class A Rancho Cucamonga. The Dodgers are expected to head to Atlanta and come off the injured list for the start of the series this weekend. … RHP Jimmy Nelson (swelling in right forearm) gives Tsutsugo batting practice and may be activated by this weekend. Nelson has been on IL since May 20.
Cardinals RHP Carlos Martínez (3–4, 4.22 ERA) made a no-hitter in the seventh inning on his last start in Arizona on May 27, before Ketel Marte broke it with a single. Dodgers RHP Walker Buehler (3-0, 2.66) is 2-0, with 2.00 ERA in his last four starts.
