One of many irritation police officers are dealing with is the sovereign citizen movement, of which the suspect in it is a part chase pictures is apparently a member. At least the guy sure talks like one when one Ohio soldier pulls him over for not signaling and it just goes downhill from there.
This case shows why cops are so rude when they pull you over.
The guy who drives one Chevy Malibudoesn’t like the police asking for his driver’s license. He claims that he does not “drive” but instead “travels” and therefore does not need to show a driver’s license. Instead of argues political science with the driver, the trooper tells him he can either cough up his license or be arrested.
Our sovereign citizen chooses option C, which is apparently to run and hope the soldier can’t catch him. It’s a bold but predictable move for someone who doesn’t believe they have to obey the law of the land, but the guy soon learns that he can be made to follow by force.
At first the suspect just drives fast and quickly learns that his little Malibu isn’t that capable of outrunning a police cruiser. That must be why he suddenly slams on the brakes, comes to a complete stop, and then takes off again. It’s a weird trick that doesn’t work.
From there it’s a pretty standard police chase with light traffic. The guy swings his Chevy around a lot, holds the pedal to the floor, and the trooper follows code three.
Where our suspect makes his big mistake, aside from running from a legal traffic stop, is when he takes an exit and fakes a right turn before aiming from the freeway entrance. The hesitance of that fake gives the soldier just enough time to catch up and hit the Malibu hard for the first PIT.
The sedan spins to the left and just as the suspect recovers and tries to run some more, the trooper follows it up with another hard PIT, putting the Chevy’s nose right into the guard rail.
We don’t usually cover Ohio State Highway Patrol PIT maneuvers, but this one is pretty good and definitely entertaining to watch. Hopefully we will see more of this from the state in the future.
