Mr. Clinton was hospitalized on Tuesday. Mr. Ureña did not elaborate on what Mr. Clinton’s exact infection was.

“He is recovering, in good spirits, and incredibly grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff who have provided him with excellent care,” said Mr. Ureña.

The former president is 75 years old and has had some heart and lung issues in the past, including quadruple bypass surgery in 2004 and a collapsed lung in 2005.

He also had two stents inserted into his heart in 2010.

But CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta said Thursday evening that they ruled out heart problems, citing Mr Clinton’s conversations with his doctors.

Dr. “What they think is happening with the former president right now is a blood infection, sometimes known as sepsis,” Gupta said.

Dr. Gupta said he was still in the hospital Thursday evening and will stay overnight. If he continues to respond well to antibiotics, he could be released on Friday.

He added that the former president is in the intensive care unit, but because of privacy rather than real danger.
