  • Chef Ma’s Chinese gourmet remains a stellar beacon in the overland.

A few months ago, food-lovers around town were incensed thanks to a secret sign on the door of the overland under-the-radar gem Chef Ma’s Chinese Gourmet (10440 Page Ave., Overland; 314-395-8797). Signs indicated that the restaurant was closed, and although it was teased that there might be a new iteration at some point in the future, rumors and fears spread that this wonderful bastion of Chinese cuisine was yet another casualty of the pandemic.

My how times have changed. Just a few months later, May brought us the good news that Chef Ma was not only reopening, but that he was doing so in extended digs – bigger and better than ever. But it wasn’t just Chef Ma’s news that made this past month more optimistic than any other since February 2020. Many new restaurants came online, while temporarily closed reopenings – a sign that, despite all the rest of the challenges for the industry, things may be taking a steady turn towards the new normal.

Unfortunately, though, this month brought with it some important closures. News that Boogie’s Donuts — arguably the best donuts in a city flush with great donuts — landed like an unexpected gut punch. Considering how popular the University City shop was, it’s hard to imagine that this is the end of its excellent wares. We will live on that hope indefinitely.

Did we miss something? Leave a note in the comments.
