Last season’s Welsh Grand National runner-up The Two Amigos will not bid to go better in the Chepstow marathon next month – after coach Nicky Martin forgot to sign him up.
Martin’s stable star will be in his box in Somerset on December 27, when the 3m6½f endurance test, in which he chased home favorite Secret Reprieve in January, is run.
Following her supervision, Martin now has an ambitiously revised target for the Randox Grand National at Aintree in April in mind for The Two Amigos, as he has previously been reluctant to send him over the national fences due to his relatively small stature.
The Two Amigos, who were last seen as number eight in the Midlands Grand National in March, may well get their season underway in the Welsh Grand National Trial in Chepstow this Saturday week.
About her blunder, Martin said: “We had had a couple of big dramas on the farm in the morning on Welsh National Entry Day and I forgot about it. When I remembered it was 1pm and I had overlooked the deadline. It was a stupid mistake and right annoying as you can imagine, so we have to go a different route. “
Although The Two Amigos is unable to go to Chepstow’s big race, he was able to participate in the trial, where he also finished in second place after Secret Reprieve last season.

Martin said: “He absolutely flies at home but he likes heavy terrain so there has been no point in driving him as it has been so dry everywhere. There are various options on the weekend after the next one, including the Welsh national try and Borders National in Kelso as well as races at Sandown and Aintree. Hopefully it rains at least on one of the four tracks to allow him to run. “
She added: “I was annoyed that I missed the deadline, but maybe these things are happening for a reason and I think it’s fine to drive in Wales National just three weeks after the trial anyway. In the long run can we go very big and have a crack.on the Grand National as my other half is trying to persuade me to it.I know I used to think the horse was too small for the national fences but they are not that big in these days.”
Registrations for the Grand National close at the end of December and Martin takes no chances this time. “The posting for Aintree is at the end of December and I have written it on every calendar and every diary I have so I will not forget it,” she added.
