SUNLAND PARK – For the first time in more than 650 days, the sight and sound of live racing will return to New Mexico’s most prestigious racetrack as Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino opens its doors for its 62nd season of racing, which begins Friday On December 31st.

The long-awaited live racing season will feature a mix of quarter-horse and full-blooded races for a 55-day event running through Sunday, April 3, 2022.

And while the casino reopened earlier this year and patrons have been allowed to watch and bet on races from across the country, the return of live racing will be a welcome change.

“People want to see the races again. There’s a hunger and an appetite for this around here,” said Sunland Park’s advertising director Eric Alwan. “I think it’s the same all the way around, whether you’re on the business end of it or as a player.”

The upcoming season of live racing will feature some of the richest races in the Southwest. The $ 15 million purse strings will pay out over $ 250,000 to riders per. race day.
