There is a brewing drama in the Super Eagles camp, with several players dropping out of the squad for prosecuting Nigeria’s double-header against Cameroon. The players who have been dropped include FC Twente defender Tyrone Ebuhi, FC Nantes winger Moses Simon, Fulham defender Ola Aina, FC Midgeland midfielder Frank Oneka, Croton striker Simi Navankov and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
Players have said injuries have been key to their decisions, some of them like Moses Simon joining late in the season which only ended over the weekend. However, the problem runs deeper as the team is owed bonuses for all 6 of the 2019 friendly against Brazil and Ukraine as well as all 6 of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers. The coach has also not been paid by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for 7 months.
An unnamed player was quoted as saying that the team would be best served if they did not participate in a meaningless friendly for which they would not get paid, with match bonuses already owed for two years. The player in question proposed that they return to their club side for pre-season training and remain fit for FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Only the team’s senior most players and newbies have indicated that they will be available for matches against the Indomitable Lions on 4 and 8 June in Austria.
