LAFAYETTE – More than one person suspected in the burglary of a downtown business got away despite a pursuit by officers on the ground and in the air, authorities said.
Lafayette police officers were called around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday to an initial report of a robbery at the business in the 3500 block of Mount Diablo Boulevard, according to a statement from Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jimmy Lee. The Lafayette Police Department contracts with the Sheriff’s Office.
According to Lee, investigators later determined the incident was a burglary. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, Lee said.
A Lafayette police officer spotted the vehicle going west on State Highway 24 and pursued it for a while until pulling over due to what Lee said was reckless driving by one of the suspects.
A Sheriff’s Office STARR 1 helicopter later located the same vehicle in Oakland and saw the suspects run into an apartment complex in the 1000 block of 7th Street, Lee said.
Oakland police and California Highway Patrol officers surrounded the area but were unable to apprehend the suspects, Lee said. They recovered the car along with stolen property.
