Sweden’s first female prime minister was forced to resign within seven hours after her budget was cut and her fragile parliamentary alliance disintegrated.

Magdalena Andersson, an experienced Social Democratic career politician who has served as the country’s finance minister for the past seven years, is now frantically trying to secure enough support from members of parliament to be voted back next week.

In the course of a few hours, which a commentator described as “perhaps the strangest day in Sweden’s modern political history”, Andersson was initially approved as Prime Minister at 10 o’clock yesterday. Her appointment came just over 100 years after Sweden first gave women the right to vote in 1921.
