World No. Ashleigh Barty may not play the WTA final, which ends the season, due to the “ridiculous” playing conditions now that it has been moved to Mexico, according to her coach.
The WTA final has the world’s eight best singles players and eight doubles teams.
It was to be played in Shenzhen, China, but this week it was announced that it has been switched to Guadalajara, Mexico due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Barty won the WTA final the last time they were held in 2019, but her coach Craig Tyzzer is unsure if she will defend her title.
“We first found out that it’s in Mexico at 1500 meters (above sea level) and they use pressureless balls,” Tyzzer said. Australian Associated Press.
“Balls without pressure absolutely fly. It’s a ball that does not bounce if you use it under normal conditions. It is not the greatest advertisement for the best girls in the world to play something they have never done before.
“Under conditions they’ve never played, in a country they don’t play and at altitude, I just think it’s ridiculous. Like a play, it’s just scary.”
Barty and Tyzzer have been on the move all year and are only ready to return home to Australia at the end of the season.
Tyzzer says Barty, who lost in the third round of the US Open this month, is “physically and mentally exhausted” and would not jeopardize her preparations for the Australian Open in 2022 by playing in the WTA final starting on the 8th November.
“Indian Wells (next month) is still on the radar, but she just needs a rest. So I told her she should just go away and take a vacation.
“It is certainly not easy for us to get there and play that event in Mexico and then return and have to do two (several) weeks (in quarantine), and then your summer is also ruined. It’s a decision we’ll have to sit and think about. “
