At this point San Francisco 49ers fans are probably used to big TV broadcasts showing scenes from San Francisco over Santa Clara, Home of the 49ers. But that means some fans are happy about it.
In it Niners home opener against the New York Jets, fans took to social media to complain about the mistaken identity. In one shot, announcer Joe Buck called a scene in the San Jose hills “picturesque” Santa Clara. Fans said so on social media:
“lol, the view of Santa Clara”
“for real even if no one wants to see pictures of Santa Clara lol”
“‘Here we are in South San Francisco. 45 miles down the 101’, that’s Santa Clara. Not South SF. Please stop.”
Previously, the broadcast began with scenes of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marina and Bay Bridge.
“Yeah. What’s too funny is that the MNF TV footage is from the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marina. Levi Stadium for the Niners is in Santa Clara, 45 miles south of there.”
“Always forget the view of the Bay Bridge from Santa Clara.”
“Santa Clara has a marina now? And no, Alviso doesn’t count.”
“The images of San Francisco are much better than the overhead of Santa Clara.”
While it may fall on deaf ears, some fans are hoping that the next broadcast will actually feature the city of Santa Clara:
“They should show Santa Clara that it’s a very nice place.”
