The hardest thing to work on any TV series is probably not what you think. It’s not the director, because there are often as many directors as there are episodes. It’s not even the manufacturer; You can’t pelt stones on a set without hitting a producer or the other. Not exceeding the rarest working limit.
In fact, it’s got “assistant” in the title: writers’ assistant.
there can be only one
In a room full of writers, there is only one writer’s assistant. (Some of the more senior writers/producers are my own personal assistant, but that’s a different story.)
Almost every aspiring writer first aspires to become a writing assistant. This is because there is a myth surrounding the work, that it is a step towards becoming a full-fledged author. And this… is for the writers’ assistant.
However, most writers didn’t come into the room as writers’ assistants. he did it by Writing. they did write fellowship; they won the competition; He made self-produced award winning short films. He did a million different jobs that impressed an agent, a manager, a producer, whatever.
There is no specific career path for writers. You don’t need to be the writers’ PA, then the assistant, then the coordinator, then the staff writer, etc.
you are not prepared
That’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with the assistant-to-writer path. It can work. It’s not just a straight career ladder, it seems that many people, especially those who have just graduated from film school and who don’t have much real-world experience, seem to do.
I can’t tell you how many people sign up Our Resume Consulting Service Nothing but student films to the credit, and let me tell you that his near-term goal is to become a writer’s assistant.
There are many people competing for that job. With no experience and no connections, you have a much better chance of being struck by lightning than being eaten by a shark scavenging a winning lottery ticket.
Writers’ assistant and writers’ PA jobs are typically given to people who have relationships with writers. How do you relate if your surname isn’t Whedon or Nolan?
You have to start from the bottom. Despite the word “assistant” in the title, the authors’ assistant is No bottom. Below that is a writer’s PA. Below That There is an office PA. And you won’t get an office PA job on a network series unless you have some other PA credit to your name, which means working on glossy independent movies for free or cheap.
it’s not a straight line
People (including me) like to use the metaphor of climbing the ladder for your career. But it means a straight path. You start at this rung, then step up that rung, then up and up until you finally reach the top.
But the entertainment industry is weird. There are many ways to reach your destination. Don’t fixate on a particular job as a necessary step just because you heard a writer mention it once on a podcast.
Especially when you’re starting out, be prepared to take anyone work. You Might Find a Shortcut You Never Knew About.
getting that first job
