Spin Up Science provides support for the development of scientists and engineers as they emerge as the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators. Founder Ben Ben We are told, “Our goal is to see more deep tech discoveries translated from universities around the world to realize their benefit to society. “
The team noticed that there were too many initiators the university’s findings slipped under the radar because the students were incompetent translate their idea into a product that can make a tangible impact. As such, the focus of Spin Up Science is on, “upskilling Masters, PhD, and Postdoctoral researchers with business knowledge to see these opportunities and help them lead innovations forward, ”Ben explains.
He added, “Our model has two streams. Our Ventures program supports in-depth tech founders through pre-incubation through initial investment, supporting from website design to financial forecasting.
“Our Academy stream provides entrepreneurial capacity building through a series of practical programs to expose researchers to local ventures to be embedded with innovators. It creates a connected ecosystem between researchers and evolved and raises the ability to see entrepreneurship as a career path while exposing the future talent ventures needed to grow their businesses. “
Ben’s experience as a nanofysics PhD graduate at University of Bristol helped fuel the idea for Spin Up Science. He told us, “Enter job markets with few opportunities to utilize the technical capability developed over the past 3-4 years, ”demonstrated the need for an initiative that helped students commercialize their academic work.
Unfortunately, Ben became part of the Ziylo team, a local spinout that changes glucose -binding chemistry that went to Novo Nordisk in 2018 for a figure that could reach $ 800m. During this time, Ben also supported the establishment of Unit DX, Bristol’s first science induction facility.
He told us, “The question became, how do we engineer so many opportunities like this for emerging scientists? And also importantly, how do we fill buildings like Unit DX with fast -paced deep tech companies? There are many world -level facilities across the UK but few support the ecosystems of change that rival Oxford, Cambridge, or London. That was the challenge, how did we engineer Cambridge’s success in Bristol?
“The answer is people. To empower and cultivate entrepreneurial ambition across science, to see more start-up and spinout activity emerging from our universities and, most importantly, to connect the current generation of researchers with these first alone to offer support and build momentum. “
Things have evolved ten times since, and now we have one strong community of more than 45 deep-tech-related ventures in the region and a plethora of dedicated resources. Ben added, “We are now working with 6 other regions in the UK to start to inspire more with this activity, all of which are showing reliable results. We are thrilled to be a part of this change. ”
Since its inception, Spin Up Science has helped see many deep tech startups achieve success. Ben told us that one of their first cohorts remains one of their proudest success stories: “WI met two researchers from the University of Bristol, Sian Fussell and then Molly Allington; Both are excited about running a deep tech company, but have yet to see an opportunity. “
It was only moments in line that Spin Up Science heard again from Sian and Molly when they had something: “a technology from their research into novel polymer solutions that can reduce the energy consumption associated with cooling buildings during the hot summer months, ”Ben said.
“Molly and Sian joined our Ventures program as Albotherm Ltd., and we had the opportunity to help them build their adventure. A few weeks ago, we were proud to announce that Albotherm raised a £ 370k Seed Funding round. “
Molly Allington, CEO, Albotherm Ltd. told us, “Having Spin Up Science on hand was very important on our initial journey. As an early stage company, many of us were unfamiliar and having the support of an experienced team to guide us really accelerated our development.
“Spin Up supported us by building our website and logo and helped us refine our business plan, financial forecasts, and pitch deck. Together, we applied and secured £ 300,000 in funding. InnovateUK and just closed a £ 160,000 matching round of investment. “
Ben explained, “This story excites us because it is the realization of a vision we started a few years ago today – to have the opportunity to support teams from ideation to investment. We have many more exciting stories like this in the coming future. ”
The Spin Up team saw the potential in Bristol to grow a really strong deep technology ecosystem with initiatives such as Science creates, Quantum Technologies Innovation Center at Future Space, so it made sense to stay in the city after graduating from universities throughout the Southwest.
Ben said, “We wanted to stay here as graduates, but the lack of work for scientists drew many of us to look towards the Golden Triangle for our next steps. ”
Wanting to be a part of the solution, the team chose to embark on a journey to, ”Bbuild something unique in a city we want to be a part of, and help the local ecosystem grow and reach its full potential.
“In the last few years, this growth hasn’t changed and has gained a lot of attention in the South West and we’ve seen the number of deep tech spin-outs increase surprisingly,” Ben said.
After spending the last few years developing a model that will help solve access to funding and supporting founders to build their deep tech companies, Spin Up has taken the model to several ecosystems across the UK. Ben said, “We is working to emulate the success we realize in the South West over other parts of the UK so that other cities are flourishing with deep tech hubs. ”
