The RB Trey sermon is likely to return to the San Francisco 49ers’ exhausted backcourt

SANTA CLARA, California – The San Francisco 49ers do not have a clear picture of who will run back for them Sunday night, but the pieces started coming together on Friday.

After losing runners-up Elijah Mitchell (right shoulder), JaMycal Hasty (left ankle) and Trey Sermon (concussion) in the Week 2 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, it was fair to wonder who exactly would play races back against Green Bay Packages.

While coach Kyle Shanahan immediately ruled out Hasty, who is expected to go on injured reserve, he left the door open for Mitchell and the Sermon.

The sermon looks like the best bid to start against Green Bay after Shanahan said he had a good week of training. The sermon cleared the concussion protocol Friday morning and participated in all three exercises during the week. He wore a blue non-contact jersey on Wednesday and Thursday, but was able to turn it down to Friday’s practice.

“With the rules of protocol, you can not do everything, but he has been amazing all week,” Shanahan said. “Just what he has been able to do individually [drills] and then get to do everything today, but you are never quite sure until they clear [protocol]. “

Mitchell’s situation is weaker as he is listed as doubtful to play. He did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday, although he was seen doing some work on a side field on Thursday. On Friday, Mitchell participated to a limited extent, though it is the week’s easiest practice.

Mitchell stepped in as the starter against the Eagles with Hasty as backup. The sermon was a healthy scratch in Week 1, then suffered a concussion on its first NFL carry after Mitchell and Hasty left with their injuries in Philadelphia.

But because the 49ers, who lost the start of running back Raheem Mostert to a season-ending knee injury in Week 1, are so easy on proven opportunities at the position, Shanahan holds out hope that Mitchell will be available in some capacity.

“I think in this situation where you’re down a bunch of guys and the other guys are brand new guys, that’s why when it comes to the thread. It’s like that,” Shanahan said. “If Raheem was still here, Hasty was obviously still there, you would definitely just wait a week. But when you decide on guys who are just trying to catch up and learn this week, you’re a little more patient with that.

“So if he feels he can walk and the doctors say he can’t hurt himself worse, then that’s why we would do it.”

Trenton Cannon, who was claimed exemptions from the Baltimore Ravens last week, and Jacques Patrick, who signed with the team from the Cincinnati Bengals’ training team on Tuesday, are the other backs on the active list.

San Francisco also has veterans Chris Thompson and Kerryon Johnson on the training team as potential options if Mitchell is unable to play.
