“We’re still well above average for the year but three weeks without rain certainly has an impact.”
Boston is experiencing its longest streak of no measurable rain in decades, according to a local meteorologist.
WBZ meteorologist Terry Eliasen noted on X Tuesday that the city had seen 21 consecutive days without significant precipitation since Aug. 21, the longest stretch since 1999 when Boston saw 37 consecutive dry days.
More dry days are likely still to come.
According to the National Weather Service, there is “virtually no chance of rain” in the forecast for southern New England for the next seven days.
Eliasen predicts that the Northeast will remain without precipitation for at least the next 10 days.
Despite the lack of precipitation, as of Wednesday, only one area of Massachusetts, in the northeast area of the state, is considered to be experiencing a mild drought. Eliasen said on X that he expects the lack of rain in recent weeks may be reflected in the next report on the drought, due out Thursday.
“We’re still well above average for the year but three weeks without rain is certainly having an impact,” he said.
