All vehicles that use public roads and can drive faster than six kilometers per hour must be officially registered before 1 January, otherwise their owners will have to pay a large amount to get them sighted, the news website Nu.nl reported on Monday.

Over half a million motorized vehicles, from tractors to quads to golf carts and lawn mowers with a width of more than 1.3 meters, must be registered by January 1, 2022.

Tractors exceeding 23 kilometers per hour must have a number plate, but the rest of what the vehicle licensing organization RWD calls ‘toys for boys’ will only be required to have a number plate from January 2025 according to a European-wide directive.

About 85% of the vehicles have been registered, a spokesman for RWD told Nu.nl. but half of the people who own quads, golf carts and large lawn mowers still have to do it.

This is partly because people, for example, are not aware that a public road includes private land that is accessible to others, officials said.

The purpose of the registrations is to contribute to road safety, but will also make it easier to check speed and loading restrictions.

It costs € 18 to register a slow vehicle until January 1st. ‘Then it must be inspected at one of our 16 locations and it will cost a minimum of € 140. And very often much more, ‘the spokesman warned.
