Donald Trump, when asked point-blank during Tuesday night’s presidential debate if he regretted his actions on January 6, 2021, couldn’t name a single one.
ABC News moderator David Muir noted in his question that Trump waited more than two hours on Jan. 6 before delivering a video message telling rioters in the Capitol building to go home.
“Do you have any regrets about what you did that day?” asked Muir.
Trump’s response was defiant, claiming that during his message he told protesters who supported him to act “peacefully and patriotically.”
Trump also claimed that “nobody on the other side was killed. Ashli Babbitt was shot by an out-of-control cop who should never have shot her. It’s a shame.” (He apparently forgot about the Capitol cops who died.)
Muir then asked the question again, and Trump again denied any responsibility.
“I had nothing to do with it, other than they asked me to give a speech. I showed up for a speech, I said, I think it’s going to be big,” Trump answered.

Kamala Harris didn’t mince her words in her response, notes that Trump was impeached and charged for his actions on January 6.
Trump’s thoughts on Jan. 6 are troubling, as he appears to justify violent mob who tried to subvert the 2020 presidential election on his behalf. Invokes Ashley Babbitt is part of a yearlong effort by conservatives to obscure their own responsibility for the Capitol uprising. If Trump loses in November, his response at Tuesday night’s debate may suggest he would be willing to incite another violent mob to overturn the results in his favor.
