ISTANBUL – A Turkish soldier was killed as he tried to stop people from entering Syria, the Turkish Ministry of Defense said on Friday.
In a statement, the ministry said infantry specialist Sergeant Savas Dinc was injured “during the intervention (against) people trying to get from Turkey to Syria illegally.” He was taken to a hospital in Kilis, where he died.
The newspaper Cumhuriyet reported that the 29-year-old was injured by gunfire.
The border between Turkey and Syria is crossed by smuggling routes used in recent years by foreign fighters who want to join the Syrian civil war.
