OAKLAND – Two people were shot and injured on eastbound I-580 Saturday afternoon, causing the highway to be shut down for more than six hours, officials said.
The California Highway Patrol’s Oakland office was alerted to the shooting on eastbound I-580 near Seminary Avenue around 2:11 p.m. Saturday, according to a CHP news release. One of the victims called 911 when officers were on their way to the scene and said he and a female passenger had been hit by gunfire. He proceeded to drive himself and the female passenger to a hospital in San Leandro.
The man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the abdomen, while the female passenger suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a local trauma center.
All lanes of eastbound I-580 were closed at Seminary Avenue from 3:11 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. while the CHP investigated. Police have not determined a motive and are still trying to identify any suspects.
