Tyreek Hill expressed confusion as to why he was was arrested by police during a traffic accident on Sunday morning one block from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
He described the situation as “crazy” when he addressed the events for the first time after the Dolphins’ win over the Jaguars and could not explain why officers handcuffed him.
He told reporters he had “no idea” why it happened.
Hill was charged with reckless driving after speeding, and passersby caught some of the interactions between the star wide receiver and the officers just outside the stadium.
“I wasn’t being disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me that way,” Hill said of the incident. “I didn’t dig. I didn’t do any of that. I’m still trying to figure it out.”
Video of the incident showed Hill in handcuffs on his stomach on the ground, and separate footage showed the Dolphins wide receiver upright with his hands handcuffed behind his back.
An officer at one point appeared to aggressively move toward him.
Hill was asked by a reporter after the game if an officer had put his hands on him while he was handcuffed, to which he replied, “Yes.”
One of the officers involved in the incident had been placed on administrative duties and the Miami-Dade Police Department said it was conducting an “immediate review” of Hill’s jail.
“That should tell you everything you need to know,” Hill said of the news that an official was placed on administrative duties because of the incident.
Several of Hill’s teammates stopped to try to help Hill when he was stopped, for which the recipient expressed great gratitude.
“I’m just glad my teammates were there to support me in that situation because I felt alone,” Hill said. “When they showed that, it made me realize we got a good team this year. For them to put their lives on the line, it was amazing to see.”
Hill’s teammate, Calais Campbellsaid he was also placed in handcuffs at the scene.
