One or two error steps in group steps can prove costly for both.

And then there are defending Champions League holders Chelsea, which turns out to be a veritable steamroller with the return of Romelu Lukaku. UEFA Champions League 2021-2022: Tournament format

The 2021-2022 edition of the UEFA Champions League returns with a familiar format and a big new twist.

As usual, the tournament starts with a group game (eight groups of four teams each), and only the top two goals in each group advance to the round of 16, starting in February 2022. Two-story, total knockout knockout rounds are played the rest of the way through to the singles match final to be held on May 28, 2022 in Russia.

  • Group level: 14.-15. September, 28-29. September, 20-20. October, 2-3. November, 23.-24. November, 7-8. December
  • 16-part round: 15.-16. February, 8-9. March / 22-23. February, 15-16. March
  • Quarterfinals: 5-6. April, 12-13. April
  • Semifinals: 26.-27. April, 3-4. May
  • Final: May 28, 2022 (St. Petersburg, Russia)

No away goals drawn

Here’s the twist: For the first time since 1965, no tiebreaker will be used in knockout rounds of UEFA competitions, including the Champions League, after it was abolished in June 2021.

Series tied to total goals after the end of the second leg go straight to overtime and, if necessary, penalty shootout.
