Trinity Rodman scored the game-winning goal just before halftime in overtime.
PARIS (AP) — Trinity Rodman scored in extra time and the United States advanced to the semifinals of women’s soccer at the Olympics with a 1-0 victory over Japan on Saturday.
The USA will face the winner of the latter game between Germany and Canada in Marseille. The USA beat Germany 4-1 in the group stage.
The U.S. entered the knockout game undefeated, outscoring opponents 9-2 at the Paris Games under new coach Emma Hayes, but Japan failed the Americans with a stout defense.
Rodman’s goal at the top of the far post came in stoppage time in the first overtime. She fell to the pitch as she was embraced by her teammates in celebration.
It was Rodman’s third goal of the tournament. She almost scored again in the second overtime.
