Virginia Tech Hokies linebacker Isimene Atute was arrested Wednesday by Blacksburg police and charged with second-degree murder.
according to a report from Jeff Williamson of WSLS.com, Atute became a person of interest after an unidentified man was found dead by the police late Tuesday evening.
In an official statement, Virginia Tech announced That Atute has been immediately suspended from the football team, and that the university will assist the police as they investigate the suspected homicide.
As part of the news release, the school’s statement read in part:
The Virginia Tech and Town of Blacksburg communities are united in our shared concern for the welfare of all. Together, we condemn all acts of violence and stand together in support of each other.
The 18-year-old attuit is a true freshman in the Hokies program from Cox High School in Virginia Beach.
