Warner Bros. announced that they had hired the Tony nominated playwright Matthew Lopez (The inheritance) to write the remake of the 1992 Oscar-nominated film The Bodyguard. The original was the late music icon Whitney Houston in the Kevin Costner as a pop superstar in her bodyguard.

Deadline reports, “The new film is inspired by the 1992 romantic drama that followed a former Secret Service agent played by Costner, who takes over the job of bodyguard to an R&B singer whose lifestyle is unlike the president’s.”

The original soundtrack of the film is the bestseller of all time with 45M copies sold worldwide. The soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and was 18x platinum certified by the Recording Industry Association of America. Two songs, “Run to You” and “I Have Nothing”, were nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars, but lost on Disney’s “A Whole New World” Aladdin. The signature song of the photo, “I Will Always Love You”, went 8x platinum in the US, selling 8M copies.

This remake has some pretty bug shoes to fill, and since the original holds, I have no idea why they feel the need to make them new. No one will sing like Whitney did. But no one asked me. Do you think you can give this remake a shot?
