Washington Mystics coach Mike Thibault tested positive for COVID-19 and has entered the WNBA’s health and safety protocols, the team said Wednesday.
Thibault will not be with the team for the last two games of the regular season against New York Liberty (Friday) and Minnesota Lynx (Sunday). At 12-18, the Mystics hold on to the No. 8 seed and the final playoff spot available. The Mystics must win at least one of their last two games to secure a playoff berth.
Thibault’s son, Eric Thibault – the team’s associate coach – takes over the coaching duties for the last two games. Mike Thibault returns after clearing WNBA records.
Mike Thibault, 70, is fully vaccinated. “Fortunately, the test and the vaccinations have done their job. He is doing well,” Eric Thibault told reporters Wednesday.
The first round of the WNBA playoffs, which begins Sept. 23, is single-elimination matches. Nr. 5 -seed plays No. 8 -seed, and No. 6 plays No. 7 -seed.
