‘We are penalized’ – Lee Bowyer reacts to Birmingham City’s loss to Fulham

Lee Bowyer felt that the 4-1 score against Fulham at Birmingham City did not fully reflect his team’s role in a fun Championship match.

blues ‘ the head coach believes his side deserves more than Troy Deeney’s punishment and insisted that Denis Odoi’s opener should not be allowed.

He also praised the efforts of his players because they created a lot of chances and even hit the crossbar with the final action of the game.

“It was a little harsh” Archer said. “I’d like to think that if you’re watching neutrally on the side, you’d think the score line was a bit harsh.

“The first 45 minutes, my group of boys never did too much wrong. They scored from a set piece that should have been cancelled, Bela fouled with the ball and the guy she marked went and scored.

“It’s a routine they do but foul, we’ve been penalized for that this season. Then they take it and then obviously they get the penalty.

We were just as good in the first 20 minutes scoring goals – we were on the lead before they scored, it seemed like we were giving them more trouble, we were going into great areas, we were getting the ball back in good areas – a bit of quality was lacking for us in the last three and I think that was the difference tonight.

“They were more clinical. Better quality than what we had in the last three but the rate at which my players work, their hunger, their passion, their combat, I can’t blame them.

“They kept going until the end. We could have easily rolled over but they went ahead and created luck after chance in the second half. I don’t know how many chances we had in the last 20 minutes.

We hit the board, the goalkeeper made 2-3 great saves. I think it could have been a 4-4 match. You could tell some of the difference in quality in that last third. But there are a lot of positive things to be learned from tonight.”

Despite putting pressure on his three-man defense against a team with Harry Wilson and Aleksandar Mitrovic quality attackers, Bowyer insisted he was justified in pushing the flanks up the field.

“Yes because if you sit back against a team like Fulham you will lose anyway. If you just let them play and move the ball they will hurt you and win the game.

“You can try to get the ball back and try to win the game ourselves. We could have done it another day.”
