Western United scored their first A-League Men victory under John Aloisi as Dylan Wenzel-Halls scored in a 1-0 victory over a low-powered Perth Glory.
Former Brisbane striker Wenzel-Halls was substituted for Aleksandar Prijovic, but coach Aloisi brought him in at the 70th minute and determined the winner eight minutes later at AAMI Park on Friday night.
Perth’s star player Daniel Sturridge was expected to improve on the few minutes he spent on the bench in his first game against Adelaide, but he wasn’t even on the roster.
Neither captain Brandon O’Neill and forward Andy Keogh (calf) were absent in the first game of Perth’s eight-game journey.
However, United failed to use the early advantage.
The best chance of the first half came 20 minutes when United captain Alessandro Diamanti tried his luck with an ambitious shot from inside his own half, forcing Glory goalkeeper Brad Jones to step back and make one last save.
After the first half, Glory star Bruno Fornaroli had a chance to take the lead in the 51st minute, but was rejected by ball possession Jamie Young.
The game came to life when Wenzel-Halls was introduced for Prijovic.
In the 76th minute the young forward attempted close range, two minutes later Wenzel-Halls volleyed towards Jones.
A short time later, Diamanti cleverly sent a ball to Connor Pain, who exploded the flank, cutting it into the goal line, and then sending a diagonal slide into the goal.
The ball slid past Jones, barely remaining in play, then veered off the far post and into the path of Wenzel-Halls, who took home the easiest finish.
Some skilful defensive work from Leo Lacroix thwarted a Perth attack in the late game and United continued for all three points.
