The band played a free show, cut short after the crowd rushed the stage, according to reports at the time. Dozens were arrested.
Don’t wait until September ends to remember Green Day’s infamous Boston performance three decades ago.
Before “American Idiot” hit, Green day – then famous for their studio debut “Dookie” – played a free show at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade in 1994 to celebrate students returning to the city.
However, it quickly got out of control, and many called the event a riot.
They played “Welcome to Paradise,” “Basket Case” and more before shutting down, ending the concert early as the crowd rushed the stage.
Dozens were arrested, WBZ reported at the timeand the reporter went on to call the band “punk rock’s hyperactive problem children.”
Ahead of the event’s 30th anniversary next week, we want to know: Were you there? Tell us about the iconic 1994 show below or email us at [email protected].
