What frustrates newsagents about magazine subscription-only deals

Newsstands are offering magazine bundles for shoppers loyal to certain mastheads, a constant and beloved service for decades. The takeaway service from newsstands is vital to magazines, but it’s something magazine publishers fail to embrace. Instead, they raise money in subscription offers designed to lure people into over-the-counter purchases, currently offering offers like:

I’ve spoken to magazine publishers about such proposals many times over the years. Just as they have their own reasons for making pitches, there are also reasons why the likes offered for cross sectional clients in news agencies are not something they support.

I think magazine publishers need to reevaluate the value they place on the news agency channel. A tip gift for the issue of a channel-exclusive title isn’t different enough.
